Concern Over Growing Number of Divorces

The Andhra Pradesh Women’s Commission is disturbed over the increasing trend among young couples seeking divorce through mutual consent.

“In the last six to seven months, a few hundred young couples, with their families, have come to us and sought help in getting divorce. Women are increasingly interested in getting separated from their husbands,” APWC chairperson Tripurana Venkata Ratnam told Express.

The commission and parents of both the parties are keen to save the institution of marriage by counselling and ironing out  petty issues between them but many of the couples insist on divorce, she said.

“Financial independence, education and more career opportunities as some of the reasons for this trend. Multiplicity of relationships is another reason. Earlier, cruelty and harassment used to account for two out of three cases. But in the last few years, incompatibility has been cited as the reason in a majority of cases.

This is linked to the fact that most of the cases last year were filed by younger couples, who mostly complained of attitudinal problems. With the stigma of divorce fading steadily, an increasing number of couples are choosing to end their marriage, sometimes soon after wedding,” she said.

NRI CASES: Venkata Ratnam cautioned parents to be extra-careful while marrying their daughters off to non-resident Indians (NRIs). They should check with their friends and family about the credentials before fixing alliances, she said.

To deliberate on the increasing gender-based violence, responses and other issues concerning women, a national consultation meeting of all states’ commissions for women will be held here on January 30.
