No longer would they have to face the scorn of onlookers while queuing up for their quota of the daily sundowner. Tipplers in the city can now say goodbye to the scorching heat and the pitiless hammering down of monsoon while contributing to the state’s coffers as consumers.

Bevco has opened a 4,000 sq ft outlet at Gandhi Nagar near Kadavanthara with a self-help counter for customers. The customers can walk in and select the brand of their choice, which could make the long queues before dingy outlets on streets a thing of past.

The High Court had recently observed that the Beverages Corporation (Bevco) was treating consumers like cattle. Observing that there were no proper facilities at the Bevco outlets, the court suggested that the state should consider appointing a commission for giving the consumers a better treatment.

Bevco has transferred the licence of a closed down outlet at Palarivattom to set up the liquor super market at an investment of about `65 lakh. Sources said that all premium and fast-moving Indian Made Foreign Liquor brands are available in the outlet.

This is the second such outlet opened by Bevco in the state. Unlike its Thiruvananthapuram counterpart, the Kochi outlet is completely self-service driven and expansive, said sources.

The timing of the opening of the outlet hardly fits into the political climate of the state. Bevco’s decision to open a premium outlet has come when the government is still battling confusion regarding renewal of bar licenses and opening of new liquor outlets.
