It seems like the residents of Tripunithura will have to wait longer for the widening of the SN Junction-Poothotta stretch. For, the Public Works Department (PWD) has undertaken footpath renovation along the  stretch indicating that the widening won’t happen in the near future.

The authorities had earlier promised that the road widening that was pending  over 22 year will be implemented soon. This was following people’s protest stating that the development of the area have been hit owing to the delay in implementing the proposal.

According to the people, they are unable to undertake any transaction or start a new business along the stretch as land has to be surrendered to the PWD for road work any time.

However, till now, the footpath along the Tripunithura old bus stand-SN Junction has been renovated spending `10 lakh.

According to the PWD officials, they have undertaken the renovation work along the stretch as the procedures related to the widening will take time. We do not want the entire project to delay again,” they added. Meanwhile, the residents here have alleged that the footpath renovation is unnecessary and aimed at siphoning off money in the name of development.

“They should have carried out road widening rather than footpath renovation,” residents said. They added that they will go for protests if the widening is further  delayed. “The PWD officials mooted the plan to widen the road in 1991. But, even after two decades, the authorities have not taken a single step,” they said.
