GRH Readies Traps after 50-yr-old Woman Tending to Ailing Son in ICU Bitten by Rats

A 50-year-old woman, whose son wass in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, would not have known that she would face an attack from rats in the hospital.

Muthulakshmi, alias Rajam (50), the victim, said she was bitten by rats, while she was lying alongside her son Suresh in the ICU.

She complained about it in the intensive care unit ward and was given an injection. Further medication was also provided to her.

Meanwhile, Shamsudheen, a patient who was undergoing treatment for head injuries, also lodged a  similar complaint.

Reacting to the incidents, Medical Superintendent of GRH, Murugesan said that blocks in the drain had led to rat menace in the hospital. He said that funds were allotted for the renovation of the drainage system, behind the ward and the work would commence soon.

Responding to a question on steps to protect patients from rats, the Medical Superintendent said the traps were kept in the ward.

Any way, he added, the ward would be shifted to a new building at Anna Nagar shortly, he added.
