With 23.49L New Voters, State Closer to 'Gender Parity'

The total number of eligible voters as on January 1, 2014, in Tamil Nadu touched 5.37 crore, with 23.49 lakh new voters getting enrolled in the recently concluded special summary revision.

Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar said serious efforts were being made to maximise the coverage in the coming days.  As part of these efforts, already, as many as 1,030 Campus Ambassadors have been appointed for 1,374 colleges in the State to bring youth under the electoral rolls.

“What is released is not the final rolls for the LS elections. There will be a supplementary electoral roll.  Any voter who attained the age of 18 on January 1, 2014, can enroll themselves as voters 10 days before the last date of nomination for the Lok Sabha elections,” the CEO clarified.

Chennai district topped the list with highest number of voters (36,36,199) in the State and Ariyalur district had the lowest number (4,67,586).

Kancheepuram recorded the highest increase in the size of electorate (7.45 per cent). The male-female ratio is near equal now: There are 2,68,93,009 male voters, while the number of female voters stands at 2,68,56,677.

As many as 2,996 transgenders have also enrolled themselves in the electoral rolls. The final electoral rolls also reveal that in 14 districts, the number of women voters have outnumbered men.

The districts where women voters outnumber men are Karur (women: 4,09,331/men: 3,94,008), Tiruchy (women: 10,27,480/men: 10,05,621), Perambalur (women: 2,49,917/men: 2,45,211), Thanjavur (women: 8,72,308/men:  8,65,578), Madurai ( women: 11,85,006/men: 11,75,955) Theni (women: 4,73,963/men: 4,70,669), Virudhunagar (women: 7,18,746/men: 704512), Tuticorin ( women: 6,42,318/men: 6,34,309), Tirunelveli (women: 11,60,613/men: 11,52,944) Vellore (women: 14,26,725/men: 14,02,480), Tiruvannamalai (women: 9,08,186/men: 9,00,946), Namakkal (women: 6,47,346/men: 6,34,267), Erode (women: 8,57,674/men: 8,54,771), and Nilgiris (women: 2,70,540/men: 2,62,589).

The total number of voters to total population ratio in Tamil Nadu is 71.24 per cent which is in line with the projected census ratio of 18+ population to total population.

During the revision, 29,38,185 claims were received and of which 27,53,109 claims were admitted for inclusion of names in the electoral roll.
