District incurs loss of Rs 19.53 crore

The incessant rain during the past three days that flooded Ernakulam district has incurred a loss of Rs 19.53 crore.

Seven people have died in the district in monsoon-related mishaps. In just three days, 96 houses in the district were destroyed completely and 183 houses were partially destroyed. The lashing rain has severely affected 46 villages in six taluks in the Ernakulam district. The estimated loss due to this is Rs 2.30 crore. As many as 29,043 people are residing in relief camps in various taluks of the district.

Rain took its toll on 374 hectares of land resulting in a loss of Rs 4.52 crore in the agriculture sector. This is a primary estimate compiled from various parts of the district. Continuous rain coupled with the opening of the reservoirs have resulted in a huge loss of crops and materials in the district.

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has incurred a loss of Rs 3.94 crore due to rain-related issues. Major and minor irrigation departments have reported a loss of Rs 6.25 crore and Rs 75 lakh respectively.

The loss owing to ruined roads is estimated at Rs 1 crore. The Periyar Valley Irrigation Project has faced a loss of Rs 1.73 crore. Many wells in the district have become unusable resulting in a loss of Rs 5.60 lakh.

The district administration is supplying water in tankers to areas where the water supply has been disrupted and areas that have been alienated due to heavy rain and flooding. Units of the Navy, Army and National Disaster Management Authority are camping in monsoon-affected areas in the district.

On Monday, 71 relief camps were set up by the district administration in different places. At least 1,629 families were shifted to the camps on the same day. Owing to the flooding, the traditional ‘Bali Tharpan’ ritual was performed on the roads leading to the Manappuram temple in Aluva on Karkkidaka Vavu day on Tuesday.
