Om Shanthi Oshana is a ‘Peaceful’ Attempt at Film Making

Movies are of two genres; one which tells an incredible story hitherto untold and the other that tells an old story in a new style. As novelty is an integral part of film making, these two models have the capability of attracting the viewers.

Debutant director Jude Antony Joseph’s ‘Om Shanthi Oshana’ falls under the second category of film making. There is nothing new in the story but the telling pattern differs.

The star cast of Nivin Pauly and Nazriya Nazim (the pair which had performed well in ‘Neram’) has indeed created a curiosity among viewers.

But unlike ‘Neram’, which tells the story of the male lead, ‘Om Shanti Oshana’ narrates the story of the female lead.

The movie starts with the commentary of the birth of Pooja Mathew (Nazriya Nazim) by actor Salimkumar. The nurse by mistake tells Pooja’s father Mathew Davis (Renji Panicker) that a baby boy has been born. But, later, she clarifies that a baby girl has been born. Pooja grows as a mischievous child with the mannerisms of a boy and rides the motorbike. The ‘boyism’ in her character continues until she falls in love with Giri (Nivin Pauly) who is a farmer and social activist in her village. The struggle of Pooja to win the heart of Giri completes the rest of the movie.

The performance of Nazriya is the highlight of the movie.Her career as an actor has undergone improvements from the first film ‘Neram’.

Her acting leaves some bright spots in the movie. But some efforts during the emotional part of the acting could have been made her a better actor.

The performance of Aju Varghese as Pooja’s trickery cousin David Kanjani is commendable. After Kuttu in ‘Malarvaadi Arts Club,’ the role of Aju as David in the film underlines his improvement as an actor.

‘Om Shanti Oshana’ has made it clear that not only the established actors but the directors in Kerala can act decently. Lal Jose and Renji Panicker have done their roles beautifully.

The music and background score by Shaan Rahman is good.

The story telling is linear and very much predictable. Linking the story with events in the past (like the entry of Kunchacko Boban and Hrithik Roshan into movie land, the scene which shows the old ‘Prathikaranam’ programme in Dooradarshan) gives an ‘unwanted’ feeling.

Though there is no room for much excitement, ‘Om Shanti Oshana’ is a watchable movie.
