Taking on the Delhi Police department over their refusal to conduct a raid even after a head up from Law Minister Somnath Bharti that the area was being used for sex trade, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said that the Delhi police were being highly compromised.

He said there was a general lack of  accountability and said action had to be taken against officers for not doing their duty.

Law Minister Somnath said: “I had gone for a surprise check after receiving numerous complaints about alleged sex trade in the area and the police refused to conduct a raid when I asked them to.”  Meanwhile, the AAP came under attack from the Congress and the BJP after a Danish woman was gangraped in the national capital.

The Opposition alleged that the AAP was not serious on the issue of women’s safety and Congressmen protested outside the Delhi police headquarters stating that the AAP was being insensitive towards issues related to women’s safety.

It may be noted here that the Delhi police reports to the Home Ministry and not to the Delhi state government because Delhi is a union territory.

Issuing an ultimatum to the Delhi Police Commissioner, Kejriwal said: “We demand that the erring SHOs be suspended. I will soon meet the commissioner. How can they say that ministers are interfering in their work? They are just refusing to act.”

“We need to look into the fact as to why such incidents of crime are happening in Delhi,” he added.

Reacting to Kejriwal’s comment, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi said that the police department is ‘competent enough’

Meanwhile, the BJP on Thursday used the accusations levelled by Aam Aadmi Party MLA Vinod Kumar Binny to attack the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government charging it with “compromising” with corruption and “duping” the people of Delhi.

The main opposition party also demanded the immediate suspension of Law Minister Somnath Bharti arguing that a person who had been indicted for breaking laws couldn’t be the Law Minister.

Speaking at a press conference here, BJP state chief Vijay Goel claimed the way the AAP had been functioning as “the B team of Congress” was further confirmed by Binny.

“This government got 28 seats on the issue of corruption, they had associated themselves with the Anna Hazare movement and said we would run a campaign against corruption and will give corruption-free governance,” he said.

Commenting on Binny’s allegation that Kejriwal shares a “close friendship” with Congress MP Sandeep Dikshit, Goel said his (Kejriwal’s) association with Dikshit is proved by the fact that they have not even ordered an inquiry against the previous Sheila Dikshit government in “serious charges” of corruption like the Commonwealth Games scam.
