5 Buses Stoned During Cong Bandh in Pondy

Windscreens of as many as five buses and a lorry were smashed and a Congress volunteer injured during the 10-hour bandh on Saturday called by the Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee. The 6 am to 3 pm bandh, which evoked good response and disrupted normal life, was aimed at protesting against the planting of a powerful bomb outside the house of Union Minister of State for PMO V Narayanasamy and the deterioration of law and order in the UT.

Police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse Congress volunteers led by MLA A Namassivayam at Nellithope resulting in injuries to some cadre. Sampath, a Congress functionary, suffered head injuries and was admitted in the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Post Graduate Institute. Following the incident, Leader of Opposition V Vaithilingam, PCC President A V Subramanian and other leaders protested in Odiansalai police station demanding an apology from the inspector for causing the injury.

Earlier the windscreens of three Tamil Nadu government buses and two private college buses were damaged near the New Bus Stand and at Anna square respectively. Youth Congress volunteers led by its president were arrested when they blocked the road in front of the bus stand. Private buses and Puducherry government buses were not operated, while TN government buses were operated with police escort.

Shops and business establishments in the main shopping areas downed shutters, while public transport vehicleskept off the road. The perishable goods market was exempted from the bandh. Armed police personnel were deployed in key areas to maintain law and order.
