The nationwide tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases neared 60,000 on Saturday and the death toll topped the 1,90-mark after hundreds more tested positive for the deadly virus infection in several states, while worries mounted globally about re-emergence of the outbreak after reopening of locked down economies.
Adding to the concerns, the fresh cases included at least two foreign returnees who had reached Kerala on May 7 in two separate first-day flights -- one from Dubai and another from Abu Dhabi -- under a massive ongoing evacuation plan of the central government to bring back stranded Indians abroad.
While large numbers of cases continued to get detected in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Delhi, among other places, experts have warned the numbers may rise further in the coming days due to the ongoing movement of lakhs of migrant workers being facilitated by trains and buses to help them reach their native places and because of a large number of Indians stranded abroad, along with expatriates, being brought back in special flights.
Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said the testing capacity for COVID-19 has been ramped up to around 95,000 tests per day and a total of over 15 lakh tests have been conducted so far across hundreds of government and private labs.
Three more persons tested positive for COVID-19 in Assam, taking the total number of cases to 62 in the state, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday. A female student of the Regional Dental College in Guwahati tested positive on Friday night, taking the number of cases in Guwahati to six.
Two more persons on Saturday tested positive for novel coronavirus, taking the total number of cases to 156 in Jharkhand. According to the COVID-19 bulletin, the two new cases were detected in Dhanbad district.
Sixteen more people including two minors from nine districts tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, taking the total number of cases to 595 in Bihar, a top health department official said. Seven of the 16 fresh cases are migrant people from other states, Health Departments Principal Secretary Sanjay Kumar said in a tweet.
Twenty-three Surat returnees were among 24 people who tested positive for COVID-19 in Odisha on Saturday, taking the total cases in the state to 294, the Health and Family Welfare department said. Of the 24 fresh Covid cases, Ganjam reported 18, while three came from Mayurbhanj and one each from Nayagarh, Bhadrak and Sundergarh.
The number of COVID-19 deaths in Nashik district reached 20 after a policeman succumbed to the coronavirus infection on Saturday, health officials said. The district also saw 60 new cases through the day, taking the COVID-19 count here to 632, of which hotspot Malegaon accounts for 514, they said.
A 62-year-old man died due to coronavirus in Noida, becoming the second COVID-19 fatality in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar district, officials said on Saturday.

Doctors in Telangana, treating COVID-19 patients, have performed cesarean delivery for a woman and also successfully treated a 75-year old man and another patient who undergoes dialysis, state Health Minister E Rajender said on Friday.
The total number of people from the hospital who have tested positive for the respiratory infection has now reached 10. Earlier, seven staff of the hospital, run by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), had tested positive over a period of time.

Fourteen migrant workers were killed after coming under a goods train in Aurangabad district on Friday, police said. The workers, who were walking to Bhusawal from Jalna, were returning to Madhya Pradesh, an official at the Karmad police station told PTI. They had been walking along the rail tracks and slept on the rail tracks due to exhaustion, he said. They were mowed down by the train at 5. 15 am, the official added.
