Jayalalithaa infuses young blood into TN police

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday announced the creation of the Tamil Nadu Special Police Youth  Brigade (TNSPYB) to assist police personnel in their multifarious activities and that a maximum of 50,000 youth, who have passed SSLC and are in the age group of 18-30, could be recruited depending upon the requirement every year.

To start with, 10,000 youth would be inducted into service during the current financial year for which examinations would be conducted in December and those who pass the exams would be given training in January. During the next year, 15,000 youth would be roped in for the service.

Making a suo motu statement in the State Assembly, the Chief Minister said the youth selected for the brigade would be involved in activities like regulating traffic, crowds, night patrolling and driving. Members of the TNSPYB would be given an honorarium of `7,500 per month during their training and service.

Stating that the Police Department was doing a yeoman’s job in maintaining peace, preventing and resolving crimes, regulating traffic, and carrying out relief work during natural disasters, the CM said, at present, the total number of police personnel stood at 1,13,629 in the ratio of one police officer for 635 members of the public.
