The states in south India seemed to record their highest single-day coronavirus spike on Thursday.
For the fifth consecutive day, fresh cases in Tamil Nadu crossed the 1,000-mark with 1,384 testing positive on Thursday out of which 1,072 were in Chennai alone, taking the state tally to 27,256.
Kerala recorded 94 new COVID-19 cases, the highest number in a day so far. A total of 39 people under treatment at various hospitals also tested negative during the day. Even Karnataka recorded 257 new cases on Thursday.
Meanwhile, coronavirus cases in India also saw a record single-day jump of 9,304 cases pushing the total tally to 2,16,919, while the death toll climbed to 6,075 with 260 new fatalities.
While many states are on an 'unlock' mode, India moved seventh on the list of nations worst hit by the COVID-19 pandemic after the US, Brazil, Russia, the UK, Spain and Italy.

Aam Aadmi Party MLA Raaj Kumar Anand tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday. According to party sources, the MLA is an asymptomatic case and has been home-quarantined.
The baby’s mother was running an idli shop in Dharavi, Mumbai, where she lived with her parents. Six members of the family, including the infant, the mother and her parents recently returned to Madurai following which they were quarantined at a government facility in the town, relatives said.
The government of India on Thursday issued detailed guidelines for reopening of religious places, shopping malls and restaurants outside containment zones from June 8. Nine more persons tested positive for coronavirus in Ladakh, taking the total number of cases in the union territory to 90, officials said on Wednesday. All the new positive cases -- seven in Kargil and two in Leh districts -- have been shifted to an isolation ward from quarantine facilities and the contract tracing is under progress, health department officials said.
Tamil Nadu on Wednesday reported 1,286 fresh coronavirus cases and 11 deaths, while for the first time 1,000 plus people tested positive in a single day here, taking the state's infection count to 25,872. They have named this unique cluster of virus population as 'Clade A3i' found in 41 per cent of the genome sequenced in India. The researchers sequenced 64 genomes.

A case has been registered against a health worker employed at a private hospital in Jalna district of Maharashtra for allegedly violating the home quarantine order by attending a marriage ceremony of a relative last month, an official said on Wednesday.

According to an order issued on June 2 for inter-state movement -- all inbound persons from infected cities, irrespective of the mode of travel, shall undergo a period of 7 days in institutional quarantine and subsequently 14 days in home quarantine. However, such individuals shall have the option of choosing from a government institutional quarantine facility (non-payment basis) or a paid quarantine facility (payment to be made by the quarantined individual), the order said.

Nine more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Nagaland on Wednesday, taking the total number of cases to 58 in the state, Health and Family Welfare Minister S Pangnyu Phom said. Of the fresh cases, five were reported from Dimapur and four from Kohima.

A 55-year-old woman from Chhattisgarh's Durg district, tested positive for COVID-19 post her death at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences,Raipur, a health official said on Wednesday. This is the second COVID-19 death in the state, which has recorded 572 cases so far.

Assam's COVID-19 count crossed the 1600-mark, with 60 more people testing positive for the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, state Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. Of the 60 new patients, 38 are from Dhubri, 18 from Golaghat and four from Nagaon district, the minister said. There are 1,277 active, while 337 people have recovered, four died and three migrated, he said.
