This takes country’s total confirmed infection figure to 2,97,535.
More worryingly, the daily death count has now reached close to 400 with 396 new deaths registered within a day. A total of 8,498 infected patients have succumbed to the disease across India so far.
The country has now overtaken the UK in terms of total confirmed Covid 19 cases and is the fourth-worst affected nation in the pandemic after the US, Brazil and Russia, according to the global dashboard maintained by the US's John Hopkins University.

Veteran Urdu poet Anand Mohan Zutshi 'Gulzar' Dehlvi passed away on Friday afternoon, five days after he recovered from COVID-19. He died at his Noida home, and was a month shy of turning 94. "His corona test came negative on June 7 and we brought him home. Today he had lunch and at around 2.30pm he passed away," his son Anoop Zutshi told PTI.

In a bid to relieve the burden on the Government Rajaji Hospital and allow it to focus on COVID-19 patients with comorbidities or severe symptoms, asymptomatic patients are now being treated at the Government Hospital for Thoracic Medicine in Thoppur.
A Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Corporator from Thane civic body on Wednesday succumbed to Novel Coronavirus while undergoing treatment at a hospital here, family sources confirmed. The deceased senior Corporator was a builder and also social worker. The 58-year-old represented the Kalwa suburb in the civic body. According to family members, the Corporator may have contracted the deadly virus, while doing assistance works during the lockdown.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that government staff will work in two shifts - from 9.30 am to 2.30 pm and 12 noon to 5.50 pm. "The earlier timing was 10.30 am to 5.30 pm. But now, we have split it into two shifts for easy movement of all government employees. A Shiv Sena corporator from Mira Bhayandar in the district and his mother, both of whom had tested positive for coronavirus, died within a span of two days, civic officials said on Wednesday. While Harishchandra Amgaonkar, group leader of the Shiv Sena in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, died at a hospital here on Tuesday, his mother died on Wednesday morning. In a cruel twist of fate, it was Harishchandra Amgaonkar's birthday on Wednesday, local Sena leaders said.
The 58-year-old man from Girani Chawl in the city had tested positive on May 23 along with three of his family members. While the others including a two-year-old boy recovered and were discharged from the KIMS hospital, he did not respond to treatment and spent more than a week on ventilator support. He died at around 10.30 pm on Tuesday. The man, who had settled in Mumbai, returned home on May 21 with four members of his family after the coronavirus outbreak. The first-ever analysis of gender differentials in COVID-19 deaths in the country has revealed that while the overall number of infected men is higher, relative mortality due to the disease is higher among women than men -- in contravention to the global trend. The analysis by the researchers associated with the Institute of Economic Growth in Delhi, Institute of Health Management Research in Jaipur and Harvard University in the US has shown that 3.3 per cent of all women contracting the disease in the country are dying while this rate is 2.9 percent for males.

A man has died while undergoing treatment for COVID-19 infection in Bareilly, days after escaping from a Ghaziabad hospital where he was initially admitted, officials said on Wednesday. The victim used to live in Delhi and work as a tailor, they said, adding that he had fled a Ghaziabad hospital and reached his sister's place here two days ago.

The Mizoram government has once again postponed class-12 board examinations suspended midway due to the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to conduct it from July 1, an official said. The examinations of Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) for remaining subjects in arts, science and commerce streams were supposed to be conducted from June 16 as per the revised schedule after these were postponed in April.
